TAG: Why do you wear makeup?

I've seen soooo many blog posts with this TAG and I've loved reading them so I thought I'd do it too.  Let's face it; any excuse to talk about make-up eh?!

1. When did you begin loving make-up?

I've loved make-up for literally ever.  There is a photo of me doing my Mam's makeup when I was maybes 2 and a half putting red lipstick on her cheeks!!  From the age of about 4 it's hard to find a photo of me without lipstick on or nail polish!

I remember watching my Grandma getting ready on a morning... she always used to wear a pink lipstick from Estee Lauder, it was a light pink with a shimmer in it.  Grandma was never without her lipstick... even sat in the 'back room' in her housecoat with a cup of coffee chatting with her friends she would have her lippy on.  She was never without it so I just followed suit I think.

Every opportunity I had to have a 'mooch' in Grandma's dressing table I would.  It's an old fashioned walnut thing and it always seemed huge as I remember having to stretch up to it so I could reach one her baskets... she kept rollers in it and an eye shadow palette which I think she had from being a girl herself... It looked like a dial from an old fashioned telephone if that makes sense and I remember always using the same colour from it; a blue.  I used to use my finger and rub it across my eyelids.  Anyway, one day we were just nipping across the road to the Co-Op which is why I probably remember this event because normally we'd go to the shop next door, but anyway we went in and the woman said to my Grandma 'Cathie, what's the marra wi' the bairn?  Her eyes are all bruised!  What's happened?'  And my Grandma had to explain about my obsession with make-up.  Grandma was mortified!!  Terrified that someone would think I had been hit or had fell cos I was neglected or something.  Bless her!  I must have been between 2 and 3 because I know my brother hadn't been born and he was born 9 days before my 3rd birthday so yeah I've been makeup obsessed since I was very little!

I started wearing makeup at about 13, like properly... I’m pretty sure I was that age because I have a makeup memory from year 9...

Me and a girl called Caroline were in our Chemistry class and we sat in the back row... there was a Physics class in the classroom opposite at the same time ran by Mr Mc Manus and in it, was one of the ‘bad’ lads.  Anyway, Mr Mc Manus had enough of said lad so he got sent to our class because our teacher (Mr Dimmock) could handle him better.  As soon as he strutted in me and Caroline were all a flutter and I remember her crouching down to get out a compact powder so I followed suit and took out my lipgloss from my blazer pocket and reapplied, pretending we were getting something out of our bags!  We weren’t allowed to wear makeup at school and quite often you’d see a group of girls getting frog marched to the toilets, being handed baby wipes to remove said ‘filth’.

My makeup for school was a Collections 2000 face powder, a mascara (an Estee Lauder one that Mam used to buy me) and a lip balm/gloss.  Once I hit sixth form though and me and my friends started going ‘out out’ my makeup collection grew quite rapidly... I was lucky enough to get bought it and Mam always stuck to Estee Lauder, YSL or Clinique.

2. How do you feel without makeup?

I feel like I look a lot different when I have makeup on compared to not.  I think it's because my eyebrows and eyelashes are fairly fair and my skin is very pale so I look quite washed out.  I literally am one big face... just a big round head!  Hehe!  I don't think I look good at all without it.  Saying that I'm often without it as I don't really wear it at all during the week.  Hence why when weekend evenings come around you'll find me caked!  I think although I accept I don't look great without it I also accept that it is my heeeeeed and it's the one God give me so I man up.  Plus who has the time?  I like to faff too much with makeup and I would never get out of the house before 9am if I wore it mid week!

I never get bored of makeup and the 'looks' you can achieve... like you can look totally different between no makeup and minimal makeup and then again with minimal makeup versus strong makeup (aka caked!):

3. What do you like about makeup?

Probably the fact it gives me a face as opposed to a head!  That sounds stupid but like I said above because I'm pale and fair I just kinda blur into a head... so I LOVE contouring.  And I love colour.  It makes my otherwise blurry features into an actual feauture so all of a sudden I can see my eyes thanks to mascara and my cheeks come alive with a bit blush and highlight and then look... add a lipstick and I have lips!!!  Woooo!!!

4. Three holy grail items?

OH EM GEE.  Just three?  Mascara.  I use Mally's and I LOVE it!  A blusher... probably a cream blush from Smashbox or I actually have a gel one from M.A.C, it's bright red and looks hideous in the pot but it's my fav blush... however I can't get it any more so I only use it on special days!  And thirdly... an eyebrow pencil/palette if that's classed as one product.  My eyebrows DEFINITELY need defining!!

But then can I add lipstick to that list too?  I'm a M.A.C fiend...
